Day 23 20.3.23 Franz Josef

Today we move on to Franz Josef. We have a cabin booked in a tourist park for 3 nights. Tomorrow we do a heli-hike on the glacier, weather permitting.

Rained overnight and pretty much most of the day. The morning was light rain and progressed to heavy rain, thunder and lightning in the afternoon.

Quick wander around Kumara before departing about 8.30am.
Theatre Royal Hotel appears to run just about everything in town.
Hotel accommodation.
Cottages run by the hotel.

Our cottages carports. No one used them.
Hokitika was our breakfast stop. Didn't see much as it was raining when we finished eating.

Storm brewing.
There was a break in the rain so we stopped in Ross, a former gold mining town and now the start/finish of a cycling Heritage trail to Greymouth.

Chinese gardens under construction.

The ducks thought we were going to feed them.

Huge wood stockpile.

This trail looks really interesting.

Mini stove in the old Gaol.
Peeking into the cell.
Tried to do insta selfies, a gentleman took pity on us and took an even better picture.

We went inside the church for a quick look.

Started raining so we hit the road again. The stop light had a time countdown.
The weather deteriorated and was very unpleasant to be driving in, so we decided to check in to our cabin an hr early.
The weather got worse so we waited it out for an hour or so then went in to town to check out the likely hood of our helicopter flight being cancelled. The morning fights have been cancelled but the afternoon ones haven't yet🤞🏿.
The only thing we could find to do indoors was the wildlife centre.

We saw 2 young kiwis but photos were not allowed.

There was also a glacier information display.

3 Tuatara on display.

With thunder and lightning getting worse we grabbed a few ingredients for dinner and headed home.

The view from our front door.
Today we travelled 170kms.
Top temp was 17°

We had an amazing trip away. I thought 4 weeks would be too long just for the South Island but I was wrong. Another 2 or 3 weeks would have ...
